The essential questions to ask your doctor

Updated 7/6/2026 · 5 min read

On average, a consultation lasts less than 15 minutes. Too short to improvise. Preparing 3 to 5 questions in advance changes everything: you leave with concrete answers instead of regrets once the door has closed. Here are the questions that matter, sorted by situation.

About your diagnosis

Understanding what you have is the foundation for everything else. Never hesitate to ask for it to be rephrased in plain language.

  • What exactly do I have, in simple terms?
  • Is it serious? Can it get worse without treatment?
  • What are the possible causes?
  • Is it contagious? Should I take any precautions?

About your treatment

A poorly understood treatment is a poorly followed one. These questions prevent mistakes and premature stopping.

  • How and when do I take this medication (before/after meals)?
  • How long should I take it?
  • Which side effects should I watch for? Which ones should alarm me?
  • Are there interactions with my other medications?
  • Is there a cheaper alternative or generic?

About the tests

A test prescribed without explanation creates needless anxiety. Always ask why, and what comes next.

  • What is this test for? What are you looking for?
  • How should I prepare (fasting, stopping a medication)?
  • When and how will I get the results?
  • What happens if the result is abnormal?

About follow-up

The consultation does not end at the office door. Clarify what comes next before you leave.

  • When should I come back to see you?
  • Which warning signs should send me to urgent care?
  • Who should I contact if I have a doubt in the meantime?

The habit that changes everything: write your questions down first

Under stress, we forget half of what we meant to say. Noting your questions ahead of time — on paper or in an app — guarantees you won't forget anything and saves the doctor precious time.

Parato automatically structures your symptoms and generates the priority questions to ask, in 3 minutes, from what you describe. You arrive with a clear summary to show.

Parato helps you prepare for your appointments. It does not replace medical advice and is not a medical device. In an emergency, call your local emergency number.
